Prison Epistles-Colossians

With Dr. Randall Worley

Wednesdays 6:30pm-8:00pm CST

In this 8-week course, we will consider the historical context for the writing of the letter to the Colossians, addressing differing views regarding authorship and date, as well as possible reconstructions of the specific heresies being addressed in the letter. We will also work our way through the letter and study its content in detail, with a view not only to understanding its contribution to the life of the church in terms of theology, but of praxis as well.

Competencies

  • Engaging reading strategies in the use of Scripture that enhance personal growth, critical awareness, and lifelong learning.
  • Appropriating the historic witness of the Scripture in its ancient setting by an adequate study of the literature, history, and culture of the Bible.
  • Expounding upon the meaning of biblical texts using proper methods and principles of exegesis informed by historic Christian practice and responsive to current needs.
  • Interpreting diverse portions of the biblical canon in terms of the whole of Scripture, seeking unity between the two testaments, so that the Bible may bear its full witness in theological reflection and worship by the church.

Goals

The overall goal of the course is to empower the student to understand the internal testimony of the Scriptures regarding their unity and purpose and to develop such an approach to the use of the Scriptures in Christian ministry.
